What should a professional invoice include?

A proper invoice is more than a price tag — it's a legal record of the sale. At minimum, it should have a unique invoice number, the issue date and due date, full contact details for both your business and the client, and an itemized list of what was sold with quantities and unit prices.

Clear payment terms matter just as much as the total. Stating something like “Net 30” or your bank details up front removes the back-and-forth that delays getting paid, and applying tax per line item (rather than guessing at a flat rate) keeps your books accurate if different products are taxed differently.

Sequential invoice numbers also matter for your own bookkeeping and for tax season — skipping or reusing numbers is a common way small businesses create reconciliation headaches for themselves later.
